Every summer, Folly Beach hosts the Wahine Classic, a celebrated all-women’s surf contest at the legendary Washout. This event has become a cornerstone of the local surf scene, attracting competitors of all ages and skill levels from across the East Coast.

The History of the Wahine Classic

Founded in 2001 by local surfers Katie Coryell and Kelly Kane Wood, the Wahine Classic was designed to create a welcoming and supportive space for female surfers. Over 20 years later, it stands as the only all-women’s surf contest in South Carolina and one of the longest-running events of its kind on the East Coast.

The Wahine Classic is more than just a contest—it’s about community, empowerment, and the love of surfing.

What to Expect at the Wahine Classic

The contest is typically held over a two-day weekend in late July or early August, with qualifying heats on Saturday and finals on Sunday. Each year, the event draws crowds of spectators who gather on the beach to cheer on competitors and enjoy Folly’s vibrant surf culture.

Divisions Include:

  • Shortboard (novice to professional)
  • Longboard (novice to professional)
  • Bodyboard
  • Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP)
  • Push-n-paddle divisions for young beginners

Professional shortboard and longboard divisions often feature cash prizes for top surfers.
