What to Expect Each Season
Spring (March–May): Highs climb from the mid-60s in March to near 80 by late May, and the ocean warms from about 61°F to the mid-70s. Rainfall stays low until June, which makes spring a popular time for a trip. See our guide to the best time to visit Folly Beach.
Summer (June–August): Expect highs in the mid- to upper 80s with high humidity, and water temperatures in the mid-80s. Summer is also the rainy season, with short afternoon thunderstorms on many days. When you hear thunder, head off the beach and wait 30 minutes after the last rumble before going back.
Fall (September–November): September still feels like summer, with highs in the low 80s and the ocean around 81°F. October brings highs in the mid-70s and fewer crowds, and November settles into the upper 60s. Fall is also the peak of hurricane season (see below). Plan around events like Mermaids & Mateys in October and Porchfest in November.
Winter (December–February): Winters are mild, with highs around 58 to 61°F and lows in the mid-40s. The water drops to the mid-50s, and snow is rare. It’s the quiet season, with the Christmas Parade, the New Year’s Eve Flip Flop Drop and the New Year’s Day Polar Plunge.
Hurricane Season on Folly Beach
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and the most active stretch is mid-August through mid-October. Folly Beach sits on a barrier island with one road on and off, so plan ahead if you’re visiting during those months:
- Watch the tropics on the National Hurricane Center and follow NWS Charleston for local watches and warnings.
- Know your evacuation zone with South Carolina’s Know Your Zone lookup, and leave early if an evacuation is ordered.
- Consider travel insurance for trips booked during peak season.

Folly Beach Tides
Folly Beach has two high tides and two low tides a day, about six hours apart. A typical high tide runs 5 to 6 feet above the low-water mark, and the highest tides of the year, called king tides, run around 6.5 feet or more and can flood low-lying roads, especially with an onshore wind. Tide times shift about 50 minutes later each day, so check the Folly Beach tide chart before you head out.
Low tide exposes more of the beach and is the best time for shelling, shark tooth hunting and exploring tidal pools. Anglers often find the fishing changes with the tides, so time your outings accordingly.
Beach Safety
Rip currents are the biggest danger on Folly Beach, even on sunny days with small waves, and they’re most common near the pier and the groins. Check the rip current risk above before you swim, and learn how to recognize a rip current and get out of one.
