Top Five Beach Drinks and How to Make Them

Lounging on the deck of your Folly Beach vacation home while sipping on your favorite beach drinks is just about as relaxing as it gets. Here are five of our favorite recipes for you to enjoy while you’re here!

Piña Colada

This classic tropical drink is a favorite among beachgoers. The Piña Colada is a tropical cocktail that originated in Puerto Rico, and its history can be traced back to the 19th century. The drink’s name is derived from the Spanish words piña, which means “pineapple,” and colada, which means “strained. There are countless variations of the recipe. However, the classic recipe remains the same: pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and rum, blended with ice and served in a tall glass with a slice of pineapple and a cherry garnish.

Here’s how to make it:

  • 2 oz rum
  • 2 oz pineapple juice
  • 2 oz cream of coconut
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • Pineapple wedge and maraschino cherry for garnish

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and garnish with a pineapple wedge and maraschino cherry.

Margarita

The Margarita is a popular cocktail made with tequila, lime juice, and triple sec. Its origins are somewhat debated, but regardless of its true origin, the Margarita quickly became popular in Mexico and the United States in the 1940s and 1950s. It gained even more popularity in the 1970s when frozen Margaritas were invented by a Dallas restaurateur named Mariano Martinez. Today, the Margarita is one of the most popular cocktails in the world, with countless variations and flavors. It is often served in a salt-rimmed glass with a wedge of lime as a garnish.

Here’s how to make it:

  • 2 oz tequila
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1 oz triple sec
  • Salt for rimming the glass
  • Lime wedge for garnish

Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a glass, then dip the rim in salt. Combine the tequila, lime juice, and triple sec in a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into the glass over ice. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Daiquiri 

This simple yet delicious drink is perfect for sipping on the beach. The Daiquiri is a classic cocktail that is made with rum, lime juice, and sugar. It originated in Cuba and its history can be traced back to the late 1800s.

  • 1 cup crushed ice

Mai Tai

This exotic drink is a favorite among beachgoers looking for a taste of the tropics. The Mai Tai is a tropical cocktail that is made with rum, lime juice, orange curaçao, and orgeat syrup. Its origins can be traced back to the 1940s, and it is believed to have been created by a bartender named Victor J. Bergeron, who was also known as “Trader Vic.” 

Today, the Mai Tai is a beloved cocktail that is enjoyed all over the world. It has evolved over time, with many variations and adaptations, but the classic Trader Vic recipe remains the same: 2 oz. of aged rum, 3/4 oz. of lime juice, 1/2 oz. of orange curaçao, 1/4 oz. of orgeat syrup, and a sprig of mint as a garnish.

  • 2 oz rum
  • 1 oz orange curaçao
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1/2 oz orgeat syrup
  • Pineapple wedge and mint sprig for garnish

Mojito

This refreshing Cuban cocktail is a perfect choice for sipping on a hot day at the beach. The Mojito is a classic Cuban cocktail made with rum, lime juice, sugar, mint, and soda water. It is a refreshing and flavorful cocktail that has become a true classic of the cocktail world.

Here’s how to make it:

  • 2 oz white rum
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup
  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves
  • Club soda
  • Lime wedge and mint sprig for garnish

Muddle the mint leaves, lime juice, and simple syrup in a glass. Add ice and rum, then top with club soda. Garnish with a lime wedge and mint sprig.
