No one can deny that Folly Beach is beautiful during the day, but have you ever experienced it in the evening under the stars accompanied by groovy music and dancing?
The Moonlight Mixer series, an annual event presented by the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission, gives you five chances over spring and summer to shag the night away at the Folly Beach Pier to the hottest oldies and beach music.
For those unfamiliar, the shag is a style of dance that originated in and was first made popular along the Carolina coast. It spiked in popularity in the 1940s amid the “beach music” craze
The mixer kicks off in May and there is one mixer held each subsequent month during June, July, August and September.
Enjoy the ocean breezes and sway to the sounds of DJ Jim Bowers as he spins the most popular beach tunes to help set the shag dancing in motion.
Since you might work up a hunger or thirst expending all that energy dancing, food and snacks will be available for purchase at the restaurant and shop located at the entrance to the pier, and beverages (including the adult kind with valid ID) will be available for purchase as well. Make sure to note that while attendees are welcome to bring chairs, outside alcohol, food and coolers are prohibited.
There is an admission cost for the mixers, which can be purchased online prior to the day of the event. On the day of the event, admission can purchased by calling 843-795-4386 by 2 p.m. or at the event gate if available.
The event is open to all ages. And while we all love our pooches, no pets are allowed at the Moonlight Mixer, so alas no shag dancing for the shaggy dog.
