Fourth of July on Folly Beach: A Star-Spangled Celebration on the Edge of America

There’s nothing quite like celebrating Independence Day with your toes in the sand, ocean waves rolling in, and fireworks lighting up the Atlantic sky. Each year, Folly Beach offers one of the Lowcountry’s most memorable — and proudly patriotic — 4th of July experiences.

What to Expect on the Fourth

The entire island comes alive for the holiday, with locals and visitors filling the beaches, restaurants, and patios early in the day. Families set up umbrellas and beach chairs by midmorning, while others enjoy surfing, paddleboarding, or strolling along the sand. Expect festive crowds, plenty of red, white, and blue, and a steady soundtrack of laughter, live music, and seagulls overhead.

If you’re planning to spend the day on Folly, arrive early. Parking fills up quickly across the island — especially at the Folly Beach County Park and near Center Street. Once spaces are gone, on-street parking is available but limited to legal spots (all four tires off the road and respecting driveways and signage).

Fireworks Over the Ocean

The highlight of the day is the annual fireworks show, typically launched from the Folly Beach County Park at the west end of the island around 9 p.m., weather permitting. The show can be seen up and down the shoreline, but some of the best viewing spots are along West Arctic Avenue or right on the sand near the Tides Folly Beach Hotel.

It’s one of the most beautiful fireworks displays in the Charleston area — with brilliant bursts reflecting off the ocean waves. Many restaurants, such as Rita’s Seaside Grille or Loggerhead’s Beach Grill, host live music and evening specials leading up to the big show, creating a festive, family-friendly atmosphere across Center Street.

A Few Tips for a Great Holiday

  • Arrive early and plan to stay: Once you’re parked, it’s easiest to walk or bike around the island.

  • Pack smart: Bring water, sunscreen, and snacks — July heat and humidity can be intense.

  • Leave glass and alcohol at home: Open containers are prohibited on the beach, and police strictly enforce local ordinances.

  • Respect beach rules: Fireworks, sparklers, and drones are not allowed on the sand for safety reasons.

  • Expect crowds: The Fourth of July is one of Folly’s busiest days of the year, so patience and island spirit go a long way.

Other Holiday Happenings

While the fireworks are the centerpiece, the entire week leading up to Independence Day often features live music, patio parties, and special events around town. Many local businesses join in the fun with festive decor, themed cocktails, and beachwear decked out in red, white, and blue.

When weather permits, you may also see military or vintage aircraft flyovers along the South Carolina coast during the day — a powerful reminder of the service and sacrifice behind the celebration.

A Patriotic Day on the Edge of America

Folly Beach is more than just a destination for fireworks — it’s a community that knows how to celebrate freedom the island way: with sunshine, salt air, and a shared sense of joy. As night falls and the fireworks burst above the waves, take a moment to appreciate where you are. There’s no better place to celebrate America’s birthday than right here, at the Edge of America.
