Folly Beach Artist Matty Campbell
Biography
Born on June 20th 1964 in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina and the oldest of
three and son of Victor C. and Gail W. Campbell, Matty's artistic influence
began right from the start. The timeless scenery of the Charleston low country
obviously left an undying impression very early in life.
Growing up on a farm in
the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, he developed a love and respect for
nature, but after living in the Philippines as a young boy, he began to nurture
a strong desire to someday return to the tropics.
After leaving Wofford College where he studied art in conjunction with Converse
College, he took his first real leap at an art career and moved to the
Caribbean. For about six years he lived hard and fast and struggling with his
vices, Matty found that becoming an artist one must travel a tough road.
Returning stateside Matty fell into what seemed to be a never ending slump and
took almost any conventional job he could. He married and became the proud
father of Nathaniel and Kaitlin. After several years he moved to the low country
and began to paint again, while working for the Fripp Island Maintenance
Department. He found new life and inspiration on the Carolina Coast and after 40
Years he's back, right where it all started.Matty owns his own business called " Matty Dreadlocks Original Art An Tings".
His work has been shown in the Beaufort Art Association Gallery, The former Toll Booth
Gallery in Charleston, and at many private shows here on Folly. Matty's studio/gallery has moved and is temporarily closed but you can call Matty for a Personalized Showing at (843)813-4162. Matty
is the real thing. Follow him through the years and see for yourself!
